Radiators Not Heating

Cold radiators in a system that otherwise works usually point at something local and fixable, so call and name the rooms that stay cold.

What a pro does

A single cold radiator almost never means the boiler failed. On hot-water loops, air collects at the high points and blocks circulation, which is why a radiator's top goes cold first while the bottom stays warm, and bleeding the loop in the right order fixes what looks alarming. Seized valves and a circulator losing its ability to push through a long zone produce a similar map of cold rooms. On steam, a clogged air vent keeps steam from ever entering the radiator, and pipe pitch that shifted when a floor was leveled turns into knocking. Which pattern applies decides everything that follows.

Frequently asked questions

It's the usual pattern, actually. A boiler-side failure takes the whole house down at once, so one or two cold rooms points to air, a valve, or a vent in that branch.
Water sitting in a pipe that no longer drains back correctly gets hit by incoming steam. It's a piping and pitch issue rather than anything wrong with the radiator itself.
It does on a multi-story system, and skipping the order tends to move the air problem to a different floor rather than clearing it.
Sometimes, though a room that has always run cold is often a distribution or insulation question, and rezoning an existing loop is a larger project than it first appears.
